Sassy Chicken

I don't remember where we went specifically, but once we got there, instead of going inside, we went straight to the roof. It was sweltering hot–one of those August heat waves–and so Henry’s friends decided to cook on the roof. The view was stunning, looking over all the houses on the East Side of Providence filling in the space between treetops. It was late in the afternoon, almost early evening. I remember the sun was at such an angle that the light it cast was a warm orange-yellow and contrasted with the dark browns, blacks, and blues of the gritty rooftop speckled with chips of white paint. We grilled a chicken over charcoal. The chicken had been spatchcocked, marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper but not too much. It's best to marinate the chicken overnight to ensure the tangy flavors marry it. It can only be done overnight; it’s always best to leave things overnight.

the way away from home

Last Friday on my way home from work I noticed a weed growing out of the crack of a concrete bridge I go over almost every day. I’ve been on that bridge probably hundreds of times but on that day, I saw it differently for some reason. Maybe it was the sun? maybe all of the rain created just the right environment for it to grow tall enough for me to notice.

On the way away from home this morning I was so tired, I listened to the news, I was so off I cannot remember what I actually heard, probably a bad thing. Here right now, I am listeneing to the noise of bugs and and H-VAC unit that refuses to quit. I’m sitting in the grass alongside the parking lot where work counting down the hours until I can drive back home. 2hr 31 minutes left.

Not really sure but I notice things more on the way home, rather than the way away from home.

I'll trade you.

Money works for the most part, but what if everyone traded goods, and only goods? Maybe the world would still have the same problems, possibly even worse. For that split second though, doesn’t it sound like harmonious bliss? Making, trading, borrowing, reusing. Who even sets up the monetary value of materials anyway? The government? And so the whole idea gets swallowed up by all the other curiosities that fill my mind.

How do those icicle drops on the ends of trees even form?
Oof, my sides. I need to do yoga.
How I will I ever fill the blank calendar I have sitting on my desk?
I need to call my mom back.

Bartering was successful for me once though. During Lent, my father packed me a tuna fish sandwich for lunch. It was full of dill, lemon zest, olive oil, red onion, and mayonnaise. It was his masterpiece.
